For the best water quality systems at a great price, call Hometown Heroes

Hard water and poor water quality are major concerns for homeowners in Kansas City. They dry out skin, create dish spots, build up scale inside pipes and appliances, and produce bad-tasting water. Yuck. If any of that sounds familiar, a whole-home water softener or purification system may be just what the doctor ordered.

Hometown Heroes starts you off with a free estimate, where a water quality expert assesses your water pressure, current plumbing, and household size, among other things. We’ll then recommend the right combination of softener and/or filtration based on your needs and budget. Installations take just a few hours on average, and once we’re done, you’ll see a noticeable improvement in how your water feels and tastes. We’ve improved the water quality of hundreds of local Kansas City residents, and we hope you’ll allow us to improve yours as well!

What Kind of Water Quality Products Do We Carry at Hometown Heroes?

  • Whole-Home Water Filtration Systems: Water filters remove chlorine, sediment, chloramines, VOCs, and common contaminants (lead, cysts, etc.) from every tap. Options include multi-stage systems with carbon blocks, sediment pre-filters, and specialty media.
  • Whole-Home Water Softeners: A whole-home water softener removes minerals which cause scale buildup, soap scum, and dry skin. They’re also rough on your home’s piping and appliances. Water softeners resolve these and many other issues. If you’ve ever had to battle calcium buildup on your shower head or faucets, you will love your new water softener!
  • Dual Units (Softener + Filtration): The ultimate combo: a softener for hardness removal paired with a filtration system for contaminant reduction. This gives you soft, clean, great-tasting water throughout the house. It’s ideal for homes with both hard water and chlorine/odor concerns.

FAQs

Water Quality Solutions Frequently Asked Questions

Kansas City meets all federal EPA standards under the Safe Drinking Water Act. It complies with legal limits for regulated contaminants, with no major violations reported in recent years. That’s the good news!

That said, our water here isn’t perfect. Kansas City has moderately hard to hard water, averaging 84–136 mg/L (about 5–8 grains per gallon) after treatment. This ranks it among the harder water cities in the U.S.

Contaminants are rare thank goodness, but in some cases still present in trace amounts. KC water reports note that certain disinfectant byproducts like haloacetic acids are present, along with some nitrates/nitrites. In addition, some residents note a chlorine taste (common in river-sourced water) or mineral notes from hardness.

Whole-home filtration systems target the most common Kansas City water concerns by removing chlorine and chloramines (which cause taste, odor, and skin irritation), sediment, rust, sand, and particles (keeping water clearer and protecting fixtures), bad tastes and odors (from organic compounds or sulfur), VOCs, pesticides, and some industrial pollutants (with activated carbon stages), as well as lead, cysts, and certain heavy metals (in advanced multi-stage systems).

They do not remove hardness minerals (softeners handle that) or bacteria/viruses (UV or reverse osmosis needed for those).

Whole-home water softeners use salt-based ion exchange to physically remove hardness minerals (calcium and magnesium), delivering truly soft water that lathers easily, eliminates scale, and protects appliances/pipes. Water conditioners (salt-free, like template-assisted crystallization) don’t remove minerals. Rather, they alter them so they don’t stick to surfaces, preventing scale without changing the water’s hardness feel or adding sodium.

Softeners are ideal for severe hardness and noticeable softness benefits, while conditioners are low-maintenance (no salt refills) and better if you want scale control without altering the water chemistry or taste.

Hard water and poor water quality show up in everyday annoyances that build over time. Common signs include:

  • White, chalky scale or spots on faucets, showerheads, dishes, and glassware after drying.
  • Soap scum that’s tough to rinse off tubs, tiles, or sinks.
  • Dry, itchy skin or brittle hair after showers.
  • Soap and shampoo that don’t lather well (feels slippery but low foam).
  • Clothes that come out stiff, dingy, or faded after washing.
  • Reduced water pressure from mineral buildup in pipes and fixtures.
  • Chlorine smell/taste in tap water, cloudy appearance, or metallic/odd flavors.

If you notice several of these, a free water test can pinpoint hardness or contaminants and show how a softener or filtration system could fix them.

Testimonial

Wonderful to work with…didn’t try to sell us the most expensive option.

“They were wonderful to work with. They explained everything very well and I appreciated his honest assessment of what we needed. They didn’t try to sell us the most expensive option when our home didn’t need it and recommended a more affordable system. They were on time, courteous, professional, and thorough. I highly recommend Hometown Heroes.”
