We keep our pricing close to industry benchmarks and try to provide multiple repair options whenever possible. Need financing? We’ve got you covered!

FAQs

Furnace Repair Frequently Asked Questions

Deciding between repair and replacement depends on your furnace's age, condition, repair cost, and efficiency. Most gas furnaces last 15–20 years with good maintenance; if yours is under 10–12 years old and in decent shape overall, repairing is usually the smarter, more affordable choice.

Here's a quick guide to help you decide:

  • A repair makes sense when the issue is isolated (e.g., bad igniter, flame sensor, or control board) and costs less than 50% of a new system's price.
  • Consider replacement if the furnace is 15+ years old, has repeated major breakdowns, low efficiency (causing high bills), or safety concerns like carbon monoxide risks.
  • Many customers save big by repairing early—our diagnostic helps you see the full picture so you can choose what fits your budget and comfort needs best.

Strange noises are usually an early warning. A rattling or banging sound often means a loose blower wheel, heat exchanger crack, or debris in the system. Squealing or grinding points to a failing blower motor or belt. Clicking repeatedly could be an electrical issue like a bad relay or igniter trying to fire.

If the noise is new, persistent, or accompanied by poor heating, stop using the furnace and call for a check. Most noises are fixable early before they turn into bigger (and pricier) problems.

The priciest furnace repairs typically involve major components that are labor-intensive or critical to operation. Heat exchangers are often the most expensive (can run several hundred to over $1,000+ parts/labor) because they're hard to access and sometimes signal the need for full replacement.

Variable-speed blower motors or high-efficiency inducer motors also rank high due to cost and complexity. Secondary heat exchangers in modern units or full control boards can add up too. Smaller items like igniters, flame sensors, or gas valves are far less costly. A diagnostic helps spot whether a big part is truly failing or if a cheaper fix will do.

Gas leaks or carbon monoxide (CO) problems are serious and not always obvious, but key signs include a strong rotten-egg sulfur smell (mercaptan added to natural gas), headaches, nausea, dizziness, or flu-like symptoms that improve when you leave home. Other clues: pilot light going out repeatedly, excessive soot around burners or vents, or unusually high gas bills.

Never ignore these! Turn off the furnace, ventilate the area, and get out if you suspect CO. Our technicians carry CO detectors and test for leaks/safety during diagnostics; it's one of the first things we check to keep your home safe.

A pilot light that won't stay lit usually points to a thermocouple or thermopile issue. These small safety devices sense the flame and keep gas flowing. If they're dirty, bent, or failing, the pilot shuts off.

In newer electronic-ignition furnaces, it could be a bad igniter or sensor. Don't keep relighting manually—it's inefficient and unsafe. A quick diagnostic identifies the exact cause so we can restore reliable heat without guesswork.

Testimonial

Friendly service. The only company that got back to me.

“Hometown Heroes was very informative. Friendly service. The only company that got back to me. They noticed our pipe was bad to the furnace and told us. Saved our lives from CO2 poisoning. Thanks Hometown Heroes. Part of the money goes to Veterans.”
